Healthy hacks for snacking while watching TV

Snacking while watching TV has long been associated with over-eating. At the same time, it’s fun to nibble on something while watching you favourite TV show. What to do?

There are ways to snack while watching TV without consuming a thousand calories in one sitting. Here are a few tips to help:

1- Choose Healthy Snacks

Whilst our brain leads us to over-consuming in almost all cases while we are watching TV, consuming a bag of potato chips or cereal can be much more damaging than consuming a bag of carrots. The former can lead to more than a thousand consumed calories in one sitting while the latter will only set you back a few hundreds of calories. Healthy snacks can include fruit salads, cucumbers, vegetable chips, dark chocolate and roasted fruits. it doesn’t necessarily have to be boring. Lots of healthy dressings and non-processed snacks are available out there.

2- Limit Quantities

So you made/bought some healthy snacks to nibble on; vegetable chips and all. You still have to watch out for how much you’re eating. When we are watching TV, one of the most harmful things that we do is not pay attention to how much we are eating, since we are not entirely focused on our food. One way to avoid overeating is to prepare the portions that you want to eat ahead of sitting down and to hide the rest of the food back in the kitchen. That way, you have your portion of snacks and only eat accordingly.

3- Eat Slowly

Just as when you are eating any meal, eating your snacks slowly helps your brain realise when you are full. It takes around 20 minutes for your brain to register that you are full so make sure to chew your food slowly in order to allow your brain the time to process the food that you are eating. Try eating foods that take longer to chew such as salads in order to give your brain more time to send out that satiation sign.
