We have all heard about how the Mediterranean diet is healthy. It’s said that people in Italy live the longest because of their food and wine. This diet has always had the reputation of being tasty and healthy. Recent studies have shown that Mediterranean food has been proved to reduce diabetes by 50% more than low-fat diets. So what’s the secret ingredient?

It’s olive oil! Olive oil has always been known as a key ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine. This ingredient has many health benefits, and may help prevent several diseases and conditions. Let’s explore few of those together.

Reducing Risk of Type 2 Diabetes:

Traditionally, low-fat diets have been advised to prevent diseases such as diabetes and lower the risk of heart attacks. However, recent studies have suggested that that type of fat plays a positive role in your health. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, that are great for protecting the heart from diseases.

 

Protecting from Depression:

According to a new Spanish research study, consuming olive oil in abundance can reduce the risk of mental illness. Other studies have found that a high consumption of olive oil and polyunsaturated fats – which are found in fish – are associated with lower risks of depression.

 

Protecting from Breast Cancer:

Breast cancer has been affecting women of all ages, all over the world. It is also one of the more common cancers nowadays. Many studies have been done to correlate types of fat with cancer. A correlation between some types of fats and cancer was indeed established. Nevertheless, healthy fats like olive oil can play a risk reduction role. Olive oil is rich in oleic acid, which contains antioxidants that may protect from certain types of cancer.

We can keep talking forever about the benefits of olive oil, but I will move to a more delicious topic. What’s the best use of olive oil in cooking? Personally, I prefer cooking everything with olive oil. I never use vegetable or canola oil… only when frying fresh fries!

I love cooking, and I use olive oil in making all kinds of red and white meat. It gives it a deliciously light taste!

Forget about processed dressings and make your own with olive oil. Salads are healthy and can taste much better with a light dressing. Try lemon, olive oil, and salt dressing instead of the store-bought dressings.
