Quinoa? We have been hearing about this popular super food for the past 6 years. Quinoa, pronounced Keen-wah started getting its popularity within the past 6 years, now it’s everyone’s favourite health food! Yes, it is a grain; however, it’s completely gluten-free, organic and non-GMO. It feels like we hit the jackpot right? Quinoa “The mother grain”, as Bolivians call it was first cultivated in Bolivia thousands of years ago. Thanks to this amazing wholesome plant-based protein grain, we can enjoy a flavorful and delicious taste guilt-free!

We have been eating Quinoa for the past five years. We like using it instead of using rice or other grains. Yes, it might be a bit pricy, but the health benefits that comes with it are totally worth it! Quinoa is a complete protein, meaning that it provides ALL the nine essential amino acids that are necessary to maintain a good health. Below we will explore the health benefits of Quinoa in addition to sharing a secret recipe from our own Co-Founder!

Quinoa is an edible grain that became very trendy among health-conscious people due its high nutritious value. There are three main types of quinoa: white, red and black- we personally prefer the white, especially for everyday consumption. Quinoa has become super popular so much so that 2013 was called, “The International Year of Quinoa” by the United Nations. That was based on its high nutrient value and contribution to food security worldwide. Below are five benefits of Quinoa:


1- Quinoa is very Nutritious

The most striking thing about quinoa is its overall nutrient richness. It is jam PACKED with essential vitamins and nutrients that the body needs and to top it off, it’s a great source of protein unlike the rest of grains. Unlike many other grains, quinoa is a valuable source of heart-healthy fatty acids. The nutrient content in 1 cup (185 grams) is as follows:

Protein: 8 grams

Fiber: 5 grams

Manganese: 58% of the RDA

Magnesium: 30% of the RDA

Phosphorus: 28% of the RDA

Folate: 19% of the RDA

Iron: 15% of the RDA

Copper: 18% of the RDA

Zinc: 13% of the RDA

Potassium: 9% of the RDA

Over 10% of the RDA for Vitamins B1, B2, and B6

Small amounts of calcium, B3 and vitamin E

This one cup contains 222 calories, 39 grams of carbs, 4 grams of fat.

2- Quinoa is very high in fibre

Studies have found that quinoa is very high in fibre- much higher than other grains. The same study found between 10 and 16 grammes of fibre per every 100 grammes, which is more than twice as high as what most grains contain. Many studies also show that fibre can help reduce blood sugar level, lower cholesterol and help in weight loss by increasing fullness.


3- Quinoa is Gluten-free

With the modification of foods and the different processes that foods go through until they reach the end consumer, nowadays people have developed many types of allergies towards many kinds of processed food. The most popular of those allergies is gluten!  Quinoa has become super popular especially among people who are following the gluten-free diet, especially as it’s gluten- free by nature without being processed.

4- Quinoa is very high in Protein and essential amino acids

Protein is composed of a variety of amino acids, the term essential is given to some amino acids that the body can’t produce, which mean they need to be taken in from food. Quinoa, unlike any other plant based food, contain all essential amino acids, which makes quinoa a “complete” protein food. Quinoa is the best source of protein for vegetarians and vegans!


5- Quinoa is Very High in Antioxidants:

Antioxidants are natural substances that may prevent or delay some types of cell damage. One study showed that quinoa had the highest amount of antioxidants among other legumes, seeds and grains.
